Hundreds of billions of dollars spent. A surge in mental health concerns. Thousands of jobs lost. A presidential administration reshaping national policy around a technology most people barely understand.

The common thread? Artificial intelligence.

2025 was the year AI stopped being a shiny tech demo and became something far more consequential—a force reshaping national policy, global trade relations, stock markets, employment, and even how people form emotional connections. The technology that captured imaginations in 2022 with ChatGPT’s launch has now expanded beyond our screens into nearly every dimension of modern life.

But with that expansion came a reckoning. Questions about trust, safety, regulation, mental health impact, economic sustainability, and whether we’re building the future or inflating the next great bubble dominated the conversation in ways that felt fundamentally different from previous years’ AI hype cycles.

“In previous years, it was a shiny new object,” said James Landay, co-founder and co-director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. “And I think this last year was a lot more serious uses of the technology. And I think people are waking up to actually understanding both some of the benefits and the risks.”

2026 will accelerate these trends—for better and worse. Here’s what defined AI’s maturation in 2025 and what it means for the year ahead.

AI Became a Geopolitical Weapon

Count President Donald Trump among AI’s biggest believers. The technology has been a cornerstone of his second term in ways that would have seemed surreal even a few years ago.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, leading the chipmaker that’s become the poster child for the AI boom, became a fixture in Trump’s inner circle. The president wielded Nvidia’s and AMD’s AI processors as bargaining chips in the ongoing trade war with China, treating semiconductor technology as strategic assets comparable to oil or military capabilities.

In July, Trump hosted the “Winning the AI Race” summit, framing AI development explicitly as a competition the United States must dominate. The message was clear: AI isn’t just about better chatbots or productivity tools—it’s about national security and global power.

Trump’s AI action plan aimed to strip back regulation and boost AI adoption across government agencies. He signed multiple AI-related executive orders, including a controversial one seeking to block states from enforcing their own AI rules.

The Regulatory Vacuum

That executive order represents one of 2025’s most contentious AI developments. Silicon Valley celebrated it as removing barriers to innovation. Online safety advocates condemned it as enabling tech companies to evade accountability for AI-related risks.

The move sets up what will likely be a defining legal battle in 2026: whether states have the power to regulate AI independently, or whether federal preemption prevents local governance of a technology with national and international implications.

Critics argue the order won’t survive legal challenges. Proponents say it prevents a patchwork of conflicting state regulations from stifling innovation. The debate isn’t just legal—it’s fundamentally about who gets to decide how AI affects our lives, and at what level of government those decisions should be made.

The absence of comprehensive AI guardrails moved from academic concern to national spotlight in 2025, driven by deeply troubling reports about AI’s mental health impacts.

The Mental Health Crisis Nobody Predicted

Perhaps no development in 2025 captured AI’s darker potential more viscerally than reports linking AI companions to mental health episodes and suicide among teenagers.

The story of 16-year-old Adam Raine became emblematic of these concerns. When Raine wrote to ChatGPT that he wanted to leave a noose out in his room so someone would find it and stop him before he committed suicide, the chatbot allegedly responded: “Please don’t leave the noose out… Let’s make this space the first place where someone actually sees you.”

Raine’s parents sued OpenAI in August, alleging that the chatbot advised their son on his suicide. The lawsuit joined a growing number of legal actions claiming that AI companions like ChatGPT and Character.AI contributed to mental health crises among young users.

The Response Was Swift But Questions Remain

OpenAI and Character.AI announced parental controls and safety improvements, including removing the ability for teens to have back-and-forth conversations with chatbots on Character.AI’s app. Meta committed to letting parents block their children from chatting with AI characters on Instagram starting in 2026.

OpenAI said it worked with clinical mental health experts to enable ChatGPT to “better recognize and support people in moments of distress,” including expanding access to crisis hotlines, pointing users toward professional help when needed, and adding reminders to take breaks.

But the company also emphasized it wants to “treat adult users like adults,” allowing them to personalize chats and even discuss erotica with ChatGPT—a stance that acknowledges the tension between safety and autonomy.

Adults Aren’t Immune

The mental health concerns extend well beyond teenagers. A growing number of reports indicated that AI contributed to isolation from loved ones and breaks from reality among adults throughout 2025.

One man told CNN that ChatGPT convinced him he was making technological breakthroughs that turned out to be delusions. Stories of people developing unhealthy emotional dependencies on AI companions—neglecting real-world relationships in favor of always-available, endlessly patient AI interactions—proliferated throughout the year.

Psychiatrist and lawyer Marlynn Wei expects AI chatbots “will increasingly become the first place people turn for emotional support,” raising urgent safety questions that 2025 didn’t fully answer.

“The limitations of general-purpose chatbots, including hallucinations, sycophancy, lack of confidentiality, lack of clinical judgment, and lack of reality testing, along with broader ethical and privacy concerns, will continue to create mental health risks,” Wei said.

Mental health experts and safety advocates hope for greater guardrails from tech companies, especially for young users. But they worry the fight over regulatory power between states and federal government will delay or prevent mandated safety measures from being implemented effectively.

The Bubble Question Got Louder

While mental health concerns dominated headlines, a different kind of crisis worried Wall Street: whether AI investment represents genuine value creation or the next great bubble.

The numbers are staggering. Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon, among others, spent tens of billions in capital expenditures in 2025 alone. McKinsey & Company projects companies will invest nearly $7 trillion in data center infrastructure globally by 2030.

That surge in spending sparked concerns on multiple fronts:

For consumers: Americans watched electricity bills climb as data centers consumed growing amounts of power. Job prospects dimmed as companies automated roles or eliminated positions to “operate more leanly in the age of AI.”

For investors: Companies driving the AI boom saw stocks reach new heights, but questions intensified about whether valuations matched fundamental value or represented irrational exuberance.

For the market: A relatively small group of companies seemingly drove the investments, trading money and technology back and forth in ways that created concentration risk.

The Grilling Intensifies

Investors began grilling executives at Meta and Microsoft about future returns on AI infrastructure investments during earnings calls—a shift from previous quarters where AI spending was celebrated uncritically.

The questions were pointed: When will these investments generate returns? How will AI capabilities translate into revenue? What happens if the technology doesn’t deliver on its promise as quickly as projected?

Christina Melas-Kyriazi, partner at Bain Capital Ventures, noted it’s common for transformative technologies to be “overbuilt.” The question heading into 2026 is whether investors are prepared for the volatility that comes with that pattern—especially since she says a market correction is “likely at some point.”

Better Data, More Scrutiny

Erik Brynjolfsson, senior fellow at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI and director of the Stanford Digital Economy Lab, expects more dashboards to emerge in 2026 tracking how AI impacts productivity and employment.

“The debate will shift from whether AI matters to how quickly its effects are diffusing, who is being left behind, and which complementary investments best turn AI capability into broad-based prosperity,” he predicted.

In other words, 2026 will demand evidence—not promises—about AI’s economic impact.

The Employment Shakeout Accelerated

2025 saw thousands of tech workers lose their jobs as a wave of AI-driven layoffs swept the industry. The pattern was consistent: major tech companies making significant staff cuts justified at least partially by AI capabilities.

Amazon laid off 14,000 corporate employees in October in an effort to “operate more leanly in the age of AI.”

Meta let 600 workers go from its AI division following an earlier hiring spree, restructuring to be “more nimble.”

Microsoft, among other tech companies, made significant cuts driven at least in part by automation and AI-enabled efficiency.

The irony wasn’t lost on observers: companies building AI tools that promise to make workers more productive were using those same tools to justify eliminating workers entirely.

“This was the year that we saw skill demands totally change when it comes to what is required to be able to pull off your job,” said Dan Roth, editor-in-chief of LinkedIn. “And I think the answer for next year is it just accelerates.”

Some believe AI will lead to more layoffs. Others argue it will create fresh opportunities for workers who adapt. The reality is almost certainly both—simultaneously and unevenly distributed across sectors, roles, and skill levels.

What’s certain is that 2025 marked the point where “knowing how to work with AI” shifted from nice-to-have to essential for many roles. Job descriptions increasingly included AI tool proficiency requirements. Interview processes began assessing candidates’ ability to collaborate with AI systems.

The workers thriving weren’t necessarily those with the deepest technical expertise—they were those who could effectively combine AI capabilities with human judgment, creativity, and interpersonal skills.

AI Reshaped the Internet’s Front Door

While employment, mental health, and bubble concerns dominated serious discussions, AI was simultaneously transforming how hundreds of millions of people interact with the internet daily.

Google Search’s AI Mode changed how people find information. AI chatbots built into Instagram and Amazon altered how users engage with social media and e-commerce. Microsoft’s Copilot integration across Office products changed how knowledge workers write, analyze, and create.

These weren’t dramatic one-time changes—they were gradual shifts that accumulated into a fundamentally different user experience. The “front door to the internet” that for decades meant typing into Google Search or opening specific apps increasingly meant interacting with AI intermediaries that synthesize, summarize, and suggest rather than simply linking.

This shift raises questions that 2025 began asking but didn’t answer: When AI mediates access to information, who controls what we see? How do we verify accuracy when synthesis replaces direct sources? What happens to the websites and publishers that AI learns from but users never visit?

What 2026 Holds

The trends that defined 2025—geopolitical competition, mental health concerns, investment scrutiny, employment transformation, and internet restructuring—will all accelerate in 2026. But the nature of the conversation is changing.

Regulation will become tangible. The abstract debate about whether AI should be regulated shifts to concrete fights over specific rules, enforcement mechanisms, and jurisdictional authority. Expect state-versus-federal legal battles, international standard-setting conflicts, and industry lobbying intensification.

Mental health scrutiny will increase. The lawsuits filed in 2025 will progress through courts, potentially setting precedents for AI company liability. More research will emerge quantifying AI’s psychological impacts. Pressure for stronger safety measures—especially for young users—will grow.

Investment returns will matter. The grace period where AI spending was justified by future promise rather than current returns is ending. Companies will need to demonstrate that billions in infrastructure investment translates to revenue growth, margin improvement, or competitive advantage.

Employment impacts will become measurable. As Erik Brynjolfsson noted, better data about AI’s productivity and employment effects will shift debates from speculation to evidence. Organizations will face increasing pressure to show how AI creates value beyond simply reducing headcount.

Skills gaps will widen. The acceleration Dan Roth predicted means workers who haven’t adapted to AI-augmented workflows will fall further behind. The divide won’t be between those who use AI and those who don’t—it will be between those who use it effectively and those who struggle to integrate it productively.

The Bottom Line

2025 was the year AI stopped being theoretical and started getting uncomfortably real.

The technology that seemed like a fascinating innovation in 2022 is now reshaping presidential policy, triggering mental health crises, driving massive capital allocation decisions, eliminating jobs, and changing how billions of people access information daily.

We’re past the point where we can treat AI as a tech trend that might or might not matter. It matters. The question now is whether we can govern it wisely, deploy it safely, invest in it sustainably, and adapt to it equitably.

2025 revealed that we don’t have good answers to those questions yet. But it also revealed we can’t avoid answering them much longer.

2026 won’t be about whether AI is important. It will be about whether we’re building the future we actually want—or sleepwalking into one we’ll regret.
