Think about what that means for a moment. You’re asking a trusted AI assistant for health information—something personal, potentially urgent—and instead of getting objective guidance, you’re getting a paid recommendation disguised as helpful advice.
It’s Google search results at their worst, except you’re paying a subscription fee for the privilege.
The Trust Problem No One’s Talking About
OpenAI’s spokesperson tried to soften the news: “People have a trusted relationship with ChatGPT, and any approach would be designed to respect that trust.”
But here’s the uncomfortable reality: you can’t monetize trust and maintain it simultaneously. The moment users start wondering whether ChatGPT’s recommendations are driven by what’s actually best for them or by who paid the most for placement, that trusted relationship fundamentally changes.
This isn’t abstract concern-trolling about the sanctity of AI. This is about a business model collision that’s been inevitable since ChatGPT became a consumer phenomenon.
